I went for a walk
to stretch my legs.
I followed the road
  and stuck to the side.
Holiday travelers in automobiles
  sped by enclosed and distracted.
I crossed paths with a gravel covered gray flat cat
  glued to the gutter.
Next a crushed crow
its wings and claws clipped from the body.
Further along a fallen fawn
lay in the ditch with emptied eye sockets.
Around the corner a rabbit’s hair blended in with the shoulder
with ears and paws intact as identifiers.
And last but not least was a fox I believe
with fur and exposed flesh tinted orange by the setting sun.
The creatures remains all a telling reminder
  to be thankful this day.
For not being left
on the side of the road.
