Crib notes from experiments with tapping maple trees to make tea. |
1. Drill hole in branch.
2. Whittle ends to fit inside tube and into tree hole.
3. Drill hole into maple, birch, boxelder or other sweet sap tree.
4. Tap branch into tree.
5. Tie rope around tree.
6. Hang jug from rope, copper wire works well.
7. Run tube from branch to jug.
8. Wait for sap to flow during freezing nights and thawing days.
9. Detach jug and pour accumulated sap into mouth.
10. Stop when mouth overflows with sweetwater, and pour remainder in to container to use for tea, or if you have a lot, brew herbal kombucha.
11. Give thanks to the sweet trees for the teas.
12. Give back to the trees and share the bounty!
